Nature-based Therapy

Many children and young people find being outside in nature calming. One approach to helping children and young people make sense of their feelings and experiences is Nature-based Therapy. This could take the form of walking & talking, exploring & playing, using nature for creative expression, or finding metaphors in the natural world to help understand the inner emotional world.

The children and young people I work with usually have one session per week on a 1:1 basis in an outdoor public space, such as Highwoods Country Park. They would need to be dressed appropriately for the weather, and we would have clear arrangements for the practical considerations and safety of the sessions. I hold up-to-date paediatric First Aid.

Nature-based Therapy usually leads to an improvement in the young person's capacity to manage their emotions, better self-awareness, stronger connections with nature and with other people, and a sense of being grounded.
